Glenties councillors calling for ‘regulations or designated areas’ for caravans

Three councillors in the Glenties Municipal District have requested that regulations be put in place for caravans.

According to local representatives, certain car parks and areas have become inaccessible because they are blocked by caravans. The suggestion for designated areas was raised at the May meeting of the Glenties Municipal District by Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Carr.

“There are no regulations or designated areas and they take up three to four parking spaces,” Cllr Carr said. “I have no problem with caravans, but we need an alternative to be provided.”

Independent Councillor Micheal McClafferty agreed, highlighting that this has been an issue at Killahoey and Portnablagh Pier, and that they are “not the place for caravans.”

Kevin McCloskey, Water Safety Development Officer, stated that the Donegal Municipal District (MD) are implementing pilot bye-laws to tackle the problem, which could be considered in Glenties. However, Cllr Carr noted that the Donegal MD have ways of collecting money that don’t apply to the Glenties MD, such as money meters.

Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig added that: “Caravans are not the problem, rather it is permission. We need an enforcement officer.”
