Proposed traffic calming will make a ‘major difference’ for Parteen - Clare Echo

TRAFFIC calming measures including raised crossings are being planned for Parteen as Clare County Council engages with the National Transport Authority (NTA) on upgraded bus stops along the Kileely Road.

The plans were outlined at the September meeting of the Shannon Municipal District following a Notice of Motion from Cllr Rachel Hartigan (FF), who sought an update on traffic calming and road safety measures that had been introduced or were planned for Parteen.

In a written response, Caimin Dillon, A/Senior Executive Engineer with Shannon Municipal District, said: “Shannon Municipal District and our Road Design Section of Clare County Council are currently engaging with the NTA on the provision of upgraded bus stops on the Kileely Road.”

“These designs feature some traffic calming measures in the form of raised crossings at several locations,” he said.

“This new infrastructure will be the subject to a Section 38 process,” Mr Dillon added.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Hartigan said she was happy with the response and that the measures would make “a major difference” in Parteen.

She said there were “different things to look at within the MD” and that she was not the only councillor seeking traffic calming measures in the village.

Cllr Hartigan said the Parteen Town Team was proactive in trying to find solutions to traffic concerns.

She said she had sought an overall update on what was in place to date and what was planned for the future.

Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Michael Begley (Ind), supported and seconded the motion, saying an update was needed.

Cllr James Ryan (SF) also supported the motion, saying all councillors had been approached by the Parteen Town Team.

He said councillors needed to know the council’s intentions before measures were put in place.

Cllr Ryan said councillors and local residents could sometimes be “blindsided” because they had not been informed about plans, adding that communication was “very important”.

Cllr Begley said traffic calming measures needed to be effective.

He said there was “no point installing” measures if they would not work to slow people down after three weeks.
