The installation of a basketball court has been sought for one County Kildare park.

The request was heard in the form of a motion at the latest Clane -Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, September 4 last.

Explaining the request, Social Democrats councillor Paula Mulroe said that she wanted Kildare County Council (KCC) to ‘support local community groups in their efforts to add a basketball court in the town park in Prosperous ’.

Replying to Cllr Mulroe’s motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “There is no objection in principle to providing a basketball court in Prosperous Town Park; however, the park will not be able to accommodate a full-size court as the grass areas within the park are not big enough to cater for the dimensions.

Additionally, the park is relatively small, and a full-size court removes the passive use of a substantial amount of existing green space.

“Therefore, it would be more appropriate to consider the addition of a 3x3 court, which is approximately a half court.”

KCC concluded: “It [the basketball court] will be considered for future works plans, but will have to be considered in the context of existing commitments across the county and the staff and financial resources to deliver projects.”
