Call for Woodland National School’s inclusion in road safety programme - Donegal News

ROAD safety issues at Woodland National School have sparked calls for the school to be included in the Safe Routes to School programme.

Parents of pupils at the school have highlighted issues with cars parking along entrances outside the school, according to Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly.

Speaking at the July meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District (MD), the Fianna Fáil councillor described Safe Routes to School as a “fantastic” programme.

Cllr Kelly said pupils are currently walking along roadsides to get to their parents’ cars.

“The programme would be very beneficial to Woodland NS,” he said.

“It would install very safe measures that would benefit not only students, but parents and teachers alike.”

In response, Senior Executive Engineer (Roads and Transportation), David McIlwaine, said that the matter would have to be decided by An Taisce, which administers the Safe Routes to School programme.

He added that the council would forward on Cllr Kelly’s recommendation to An Taisce for consideration.
