The new complex, inspired by the vision and leadership of the late Fr Lalor, has evolved into a vibrant community hub

Joshua McCormack TO celebrate the development of the Fr John Lalor community complex in Camross, Laois Co Council hosted all the members of the Camross heritage committee at a recent gathering of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district.

The new complex, inspired by the vision and leadership of the late Fr Lalor, has evolved into a vibrant community hub, which now serves the people of Camross and surrounding areas. Supported by funding from Laois Co Council under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, along with contributions from Pobal and the LEADER programme, the development includes a modern community building, a gym, landscaped parklands, a tree nursery, a looped riverside walk and an aquatic outdoor classroom developed with LAWPRO funding.

A key feature of the project is the poet’s cottage, a cherished heritage building originally constructed to honour local poet Patrick Ryan, whose storied walls now house a community café. Speaking at the event, Cllr Conor Bergin, cathaoirleach of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district, said: “This Project reflects an outstanding commitment to preserving and promoting our local heritage, ensuring that the rich history and story of Camross is not only remembered but shared and celebrated. The work of the committee has been driven by the volunteers, local pride and by a deep respect for those who came before us.”
