Kilkenny County Council unanimously voted to approve the much-debated Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) at a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

The sweeping infrastructure project is aimed at reducing car dependency and boosting sustainable transport options in the city but had come under much scrutiny in terms of its sequencing and potential impacts on business with Kilkenny Chamber holding two meetings on the plan.

One key point of contention was the possible pedestrianisation of High Street and introduction of one-way systems in other areas, and although this can still be enacted, an amendment requires that a Part 8 public consultation will be required for any permanent measures.
