Limerick business owner’s speeding charge dismissed in court

A BUSINESSMAN accused of speeding in a rental car has had his case dismissed by a judge at Kilmallock District Court.

Jamie Lewis, with an address at Sarsfield Park, Rosbrien, Limerick , was before the court on foot of an unpaid Fixed Charge Penalty Notice issued for an alleged speeding incident that was detected on the Blackboy Road, Limerick.

Prosecuting Inspector Gearóid Thompson put forth that the car was driving 64 km/h in a 50 zone on the Blackboy Road, Limerick.

Mr Lewis told the court: “The first notification I had from this, was a call from someone in a property I used to live in.”

Mr Lewis explained that his sustainable energy business uses rental cars on a regular basis, and that at present, his business had the loan of six cars.

Judge Patricia Harney asked the man who exactly drove the car, to which Mr Lewis replied: “On that occasion, I don’t know.”

Insp Thompson asked Mr Lewis if he was notified of the Fixed Charge Penalty Notice by the rental agency, to which Mr Lewis answered in the negative.

Insp Thompson said the rental company listed the car as taken out by Mr Lewis. “We’ve all rented cars before,” Insp Thompson said.

Solicitor Cathal Quirke, representing Mr Lewis, said that his client employs over 40 people in the region.

Mr Quirke said Mr Lewis wishes to put his best foot forward.

Judge Patricia Harney told Mr Quirke: “If your client runs a business he has to be a bit more careful.”
