Councillor calls on land to be rezoned for economic development in South Donegal - Donegal Daily

Independent councillor Jimmy Brogan wants land rezoned between Mountcharles and Killybegs for economic development.

Independent councillor Jimmy Brogan has called for rezoned land to be made available for businesses looking to expand in South Donegal.

Brogan, who is the current Cathaoirleach of Donegal Municipal District, made the request at a meeting in Donegal Town last week.

Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Naughton had requested an urgent meeting with the Office of the Planning Regulator and the Economic Development team after rezoned land was rejected in Donegal Town .

Brogan seconded that motion for a meeting with the Planning Regulator, but also said that they should explore opportunities to find suitable land between Mountcharles and Killybegs when they are meeting with the Economic Development team from Donegal County Council.

"I do think when we get a meeting with the Economic Development team that we should look at trying to find land between Killybegs and Mountcharles.

"There is growing demand for land to be rezoned for economic development in both areas, and a lot of small businesses are looking for parts of land to expand to, but they are not able to get them," said Brogan.

Brogan pointed to the recent school closures in rural parts of a Donegal due to declining enrollments as a sign that councillors need to do more to keep businesses in the area, and help them scale where needed.

"We have small schools closing all around us, and I think it's vital that we try and keep some of these businesses in the area.

"I know there is some land in Killybegs, but a lot of the businesses I have spoken to are coming back to me, and saying it's far too expensive. I think we should look to explore something between Killybegs and Mountcharles when we next meet with the Economic Development team," said Brogan.
