Over 150 events will be held in Donegal during National Heritage Week, which gets underway this weekend.

National Heritage Week takes place from Saturday, August 15th to Sunday, August 23rd.

This year's theme, ‘Heritage at Risk’, encourages people to celebrate and protect the places, traditions, skills, wildlife and stories that make our communities unique.

From guided walks, talks, workshops and exhibitions to biodiversity events, family activities, traditional craft demonstrations, historical re-enactments and archaeological re-discoveries, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Whether you have a lifelong interest in heritage or simply want to explore somewhere new in your local area, Heritage Week offers countless opportunities to learn, participate and connect with the rich built, cultural, natural and archaeological heritage that surrounds us.

Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer has said our heritage is at risk, and is calling on everyone to row in behind the week-long series of events.

“We all need to lend a hand to help protect our heritage at risk. Our heritage reinforces our sense of place, supports our well-being, provides local employment, and supports our local economy and tourism industry.

"It’s in all our interests to help protect, conserve, promote and enhance our heritage. Many of this year's events have been organised by community groups and individuals whose local knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment continue to make Heritage Week in County Donegal such a success.”

The Culture Division of Donegal County Council – that comprises the County Donegal Heritage Office, County Library Service, County Museum, County Archives, County Biodiversity Office, County Arts Office and the Regional Cultural Centre – has developed an extensive programme of events that showcases the breadth of expertise and cultural resources in the county.

The County Library Service has organised a varied programme including local history talks, heritage walks, family events and collaborations with partner organisations.

Donegal County Museum will welcome visitors to a series of exhibitions, talks and special events celebrating the county's rich cultural heritage, while Donegal County Archives will provide opportunities to discover the stories preserved within the county's documentary collections through talks and archive showcases.

The Biodiversity Office will encourage people to experience Donegal's natural heritage through guided walks and events focusing on native wildlife, habitats and conservation.

Meanwhile, the Regional Cultural Centre will contribute to the week with exhibitions and cultural events that celebrate both Donegal's heritage and the county's vibrant contemporary cultural life.

Together, these collective efforts have resulted in more than 150 events taking place across County Donegal during National Heritage Week, offering something for people of every age and interest.

The programme demonstrates the strength of partnership between the Culture Division and communities across the county.

National Heritage Week is coordinated nationally by The Heritage Council and locally by the County Donegal Heritage Office.

It continues to be one of Ireland's largest cultural celebrations, providing opportunities for people of all ages to appreciate the county's rich natural, built and cultural heritage.
