Vulnerable Dublin passengers blindsided as bus stop removed without warning

The sudden removal of of a bus stop on Sundrive Road means elderly passengers in Crumlin going to St James's Hospital have had to make new arrangements with "no warning whatsoever"

Elderly and vulnerable passengers in Crumlin were dismayed to discover their bus stop no longer existed.

At last week’s South East Area Committee, Independent Councillor Pat Dunne outlined those who have been seriously inconvenienced by the sudden removal of the bus stop 1395 adjacent to 146 Sundrive Road in recent weeks. With “no warning whatsoever” he said elderly residents who rely on the S2 and 74 buses to access places like St James's Hospital had to walk considerable distances to another stop.

Cllr Dunne said that for some a removed bus stop might be a small issue, but for others it can have a serious impact. He cited confusion over the bus stop's status and said despite councillors approving a shelter, it was unexpectedly replaced by a loading bay and removed.

“It seems to be three parties involved,” Cllr Dunne said, stating that Dublin City Council, Dublin Bus and the National Transport Authority (NTA) “haven’t been talking to each other properly”.

After probing the issue, Cllr Dunne revealed he got a reply from the NTA stating that the stop had been removed due to “parked vehicles at the stop” and people being unable to access the buses safely. He called for the stop to be installed, the previously agreed bus shelter to be erected, and for accessibility for people in wheelchairs or with prams to be prioritised.

Social Democrats Cllr Noelle Brown said that the sudden removal of a stop is “not acceptable” and stands as the antithesis of Active Travel goals . She said that if DCC wishes to "encourage people to use buses” then elderly people doing their best to use public transport shouldn’t arrive to find stops have disappeared without warning.

Green Party Cllr Carolyn Moore said there has been so many public transport changes to the Kimmage-Rathmines area in recent times and people are still trying to adjust. “We’re trying to encourage people to have confidence in the reliability of the bus service, but people turn up one day and their bus stop is gone from the pavement without any notification," she said.

Ultimately, bus stops and where they are located is decided by the NTA. Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey pointed out that councillors previously held this power but it was taken away.

Executive Manager Michelle Robinson committed to liaising with all parties involved to “find out what happened” in relation to stop 1395 and ensure that any changes or removals are communicated to representatives. She agreed that people shouldn’t be “turning up at a bus stop and it’s no longer there”.

Cllr Dunne said it’s important that they don’t simply “push responsibility onto somebody else,” as a previously agreed upon bus shelter never came to fruition. “Somebody gave approval to put in a loading bay, somebody gave approval to remove the bus stop,” he said, calling for a written report to allow people of the area to see exactly how this happened.
