Funding sought for roundabout near Laois secondary school - News - Laois Nationalist
Funding is being sought to provide a roundabout on the R445, as it ran past Mountrath Community School.
Joshua McCormack AT the latest meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district, Cllr James Kelly sought funding to provide a roundabout on the R445, as it ran past Mountrath Community School.
In making his case to the municipal district, Cllr Kelly explained that there wasn’t a single proper roundabout in Mountrath; the roundabout in Mountrath Central Square, he clarified, was unique in that it was probably one of the few roundabouts in Ireland that didn’t require motorists to drive around it, connected as it was to the main road.
The councillor received the following response from a representative of the area office: “The first step on this is to conduct traffic surveys for volume and queueing, following on from this, plans can start to be made for a roundabout that will most likely require additional land. A cost estimate could then be prepared.” Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Cllr Kelly mentioned Mountrath Community School in the vicinity, with its 1,000 students and staff during term time and the ever-expanding St Vincent’s cemetery.
In addition, Cllr Kelly explained that there was a commitment from the landowners in the area to come to an arrangement where they would make land available.
