Kilkenny communities to receive over €1m in flood defence funding

Representatives of Kilkenny at local and national level have welcomed the announcement of €1.135m in funding to introduce interim flood protection measures in response to flooding caused by Storm Chandra earlier this year.

The funding was announced on Thursday by Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD at an event attended by Chief Executives and Directors of Services from the eight affected local authorities, along with elected representatives, where a total of €6.6m in funding was approved nationally.

The funding allocated to Kilkenny will support works in Graiguenamangh, Inistioge, Thomastown, Freshford and Callan.

Kilkenny County Council called the funding an “important announcement, which will assist communities impacted by recent flooding while longer-term flood relief solutions continue to be developed.”

Also commenting on the funding, Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow/Kilkenny, John McGuinness said: “I very much welcome this substantial funding package of €1.135m for flood protection measures in Kilkenny.”

“Crucially, this will go directly towards immediate and interim works in Thomastown, Graiguenamanagh, Inistioge and Freshford. These are communities that have endured the real impact of flooding, and this funding will allow essential works to begin without delay.”
