A woman appeared before a Mayo court where she was charged with aggravated sexual assault will be prosecuted in the Central Criminal Court.

The woman who cannot be named for legal reasons appeared before Castlebar District Court after she was arrested in Ballina on Tuesday, June 6 for the purpose of charging her.

Garda Michael McGrath told Judge Ciarán Liddy that he charged the female at 6.24pm on June 2 with three offences including one of aggravated sexual assault which is alleged to have occurred on May 27, 2020. The defendant made no reply after she was cautioned.

Court presenter, Sergeant Fiona Farrell told the court that the DPP had directed prosecution on indictment in the Central Criminal Court.

Garda McGrath said the State had no objection to the defendant being remanded on bail subject to conditions which had been agreed in advance with her solicitor, Peter Loftus.

Judge Liddy remanded the defendant on bail to appear before Ballina District Court on July 14 for service of the book of evidence.
