Call to restrict large vehicles on Windyhall Road during peak traffic - Donegal News

AN assessment will be carried out on Windyhall Road in Letterkenny after calls were made to restrict HGVs at peak traffic times.

A motion on the issue was brought to Tuesday’s meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District by 100% Redress Cllr Tómas Seán Devine.

He said: “Large vehicles are causing serious tail backs and causing serious traffic issues during these times, if this could be done it would help in a major way to help keep traffic moving.”

Cllr Devine said he had witnessed the issue for himself after being contacted “several times”.

Senior Executive Engineer (Roads), David McIlwaine said he would follow it up.

He added that the legalities would need to be discussed with gardaí.

Considerations would also need to be made for school buses, and Independent Cllr Michael McBride added that exceptions would need to be made for local farmers.

“The assessment would establish if it is appropriate to use sign number RUS 052 Maximum Vehicle Width sign with the Supplementary plate giving the time restrictions is appropriate at this location,” reads the official council response.

“Such restrictions would limit to car use only during the restricted period. There may be difficulties regarding the enforcement of the restrictions and consultation will be required with the Gardaí on the suitability of this restriction and how it might be achieved.”

Windyhall is included in plans for the new Northern Network Project.

Under the project, a new road will be built from Windyhall to Killylastin.

It will partially replace the existing L-5084-1 Killyclug, L-1152-1 Windy Hall Road, connecting to L-59421- Killylastin and L-11522-1 An Gleann Rua to the north, L-5914-1 Long Lane to the south, L-1512-6 Killyclug L-1174-3 The Grange and L-1174-1 Dr McGinley Road in the west and extending as far as the L-11649 Windyhall in the east linking to Knocknamona Roundabout.
