Council announces series of road closures for popular marathon event

Mayo County Council have signalled their intention to close multiple roads in Swinford next month in order to facilitate the Ireland West 3/4 Marathon.

The event, which takes place on Saturday, September 5, will bring athletes from across the country to the town to compete on what promises to be an exciting occasion.

To help with the smooth running of the race, there will be a series of closures.

The first closure occurs at 9:55 am, when the Kiltimagh Road will close from the N5 junction to the L-1311 and L-1332 junction at Swinford Church.

The road will be shut for five minutes at the start of each race time (9.55 am to 10 am, 10.10 am to 10.15 am, and 10.25 am to 10.30 am) and will remain closed until 2.30 pm.

Diversions will be available via the Kilkelly Road and N5. Local access will be available via a one-way system.

There will be a stop-go system in place for traffic accessing Tesco, Aurivo and the Swinford Amenity Park.

Park Road will be closed from 10 am to 2.30 pm, with local access via the Kiltimagh Road.

Local access will be provided via a one-way system from Swinford Church towards Meelick between 12 midday and 2.30 pm.

The last road to be closed between 10 am and 2.30 pm will be the Meelick Road from the Old Castlebar Road to Meelick Church. Similarly, a one-way system will be in place towards Meelick from 11 am to 2.30 pm.

From 10.20 am, Meelick Village, the Ardhoom Road (from Ardhoom to Laghtmadurkan), and the Laghtmadurkan Road (from Laghtmacdurkan to Gweestion Bridge) will be closed. Local diversions will be in place.

From 10.30 am, local diversions will be in place for those on the Old Dump Road and the Carrowgalda to Ballylahan Road (from Gweestion Bridge to Gurteen).

From 10.40 am, the Gurteen to Ardacarha Road will be closed, while the Carrowgallda Road (from Ardacahra to Gweestion Bridge) and Newcastle Road (from Gweestion Bridge to Newcastle Gates) will be closed from 10.50 am.

Lastly, the Newcastle to Meelick Road and the Clooninshin to Laghtmadurkan Road will be closed from 11 am.
