A LETTERKENNY councillor has submitted a motion calling for the suspension of Active Travel works in the town.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan of Fianna Fáil is expected to table the motion at the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting next week.

It reads: “I propose that the Council suspend the proposed works with Active Travel plans already passed through planning at this point.

“Namely the Ballyraine Road to Tesco roundabout, Circular Road – from the hospital roundabout to the top of Glencar and that we as a Council seek specialist traffic consultants to look at short-, medium- and long-term solutions.”

The motion comes as motorists have expressed their deep frustration since schools have reopened, with traffic gridlock affecting transport providers, taxi drivers and those commuting to work or appointments.

Cllr Brogan and other local Fianna Fáil councillors have strongly opposed Active Travel, with some considering it a contributing factor to the town’s traffic woes.

Last week, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly shared a statement to social media where he expressed his concerns with ongoing projects.

“I’m not putting the full blame on Active Travel nor the people doing the work but it certainly has added fuel to the fire so to speak,” he said.

“It’s premature. Everything else should have been put in place first, your Northern relief road, Southern relief road and of course the Ten T project and not one but two if not three bridges over the River Swilly.

“There should also have been a top of the range town bus service in place, a service the town is crying out for now for years. We are now sitting in a situation where if we had a town bus service in place it would be a waste of time for it too would be stuck in traffic and running late.”

Separately, 100% Redress councillor Tomás Seán Devine has submitted a motion calling for a meeting with relevant stakeholders to discuss Letterkenny traffic in the run-up to Christmas.
