Planning permission has been granted for the construction of 21 homes in a Laois town.

Patrick Percival and James Sex applied for planning permission for the development at the front of the Ard Erin housing estate in Dysartbeagh, Mountrath back in December 2025.

The site for the development is located at the mount of the Ard Erin housing estate which was built in the mid 2000s.

The original plans for the development included 22 homes, one was later omitted from the design plans.

The planning application also sought permission to demolish an agricultural shed on the site.

Laois County Council has now approved the plans for the 21 home development which comprises six one-bedroom units, six two-bedroom units, and nine three-bedroom units on the 0.4501 hectare site.

The development will incorporate three public green areas and all houses will have access to a private open space to the rear of the property.

The housing development aims to provide accommodation for a range of people, from families to single people.

There was just one observation regarding the planning application from a local Ard Erin resident. This submission included concerns about the pre-existing issues with the volume of traffic in the area and argued that a roundabout would be needed to accommodate the extra traffic.

The submitter also noted robins nesting in the hedge surrounding the site and stated that they hope the necessary measures will be taken to protect them.
