Plans for a safer walking and cycling route between Dunfanaghy and Portnablagh are moving up a gear with a Part VIII application.

Donegal County Council has confirmed that the N56 Dunfanaghy to Portnablagh Active Travel Scheme has now completed its design and environmental evaluation stage and is ready to enter the statutory process.

The application is due to be submitted to the council’s Planning Section this week.

The move marks a step forward for the long-awaited project, which aims to improve walking and cycling facilities and safer crossings along the busy stretch of the N56 linking areas of the coastal resort.

Local Independent Cllr Michael McClafferty has welcomed the latest progress.

"It’s something I’ve pushed very hard for over the years alongside others as well,” he said.

Planning documents will be available for public inspection at Dungloe Public Service Centre and County House, Lifford, from Thursday, 10th September until Friday, 9th October 2026.

The plans will also be available to view online later this week through Donegal County Council’s consultation website .

Members of the public will have until 4pm on Monday, 26th October to make submissions or observations on the proposed development.
