Kilkenny County Council’s move to new voter registration system welcomed

Carlow- Kilkenny TD and Leas-Cheann Comhairle John McGuinness has welcomed the move by Kilkenny County Council from the existing CheckTheRegister.ie system to the new national Voter.ie electoral registration system.

Deputy McGuinness said the move represents an important step forward in making Ireland’s electoral registration system more modern, accessible and accurate, while making it easier for people to manage their own electoral registration.

“This is a very welcome development for the people of Kilkenny,” he outlined. “The move to Voter.ie will make it easier for people to register to vote, check their details and keep their information up to date, all through a more streamlined national system.”

“Having a centralised system also brings important benefits in terms of the accuracy and integrity of the electoral register. It will improve the ability of local authorities to identify changes such as people moving address or deceased electors, while also helping to identify and reduce duplication,” he added.

Deputy McGuinness said the modernisation of the electoral register has already made the process significantly more convenient for voters.

“People no longer have to wait for a particular period of the year to make changes to their registration. Rolling registration and online services mean that people can take action when their circumstances change, rather than having to rely on a limited annual registration window.”

“The use of PPS numbers as part of the registration process also provides an important means of verifying identity and improving the quality of the information held on the register.”

“For the public, this should mean a simpler and more accessible service. For local authorities, it provides better tools to maintain an accurate and comprehensive electoral register,” he continued.

Deputy McGuinness said the importance of having an accurate electoral register could not be overstated.

“Ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their democratic right is fundamental. At the same time, we need confidence that the electoral register accurately reflects the population and that people’s details are properly maintained.”

“The introduction of Voter.ie is an important part of that process and I welcome Kilkenny County Council’s move to the new system. I would encourage people in Kilkenny to take the opportunity to check their electoral registration details and make sure that their information is correct and up to date.”

“I also want to acknowledge the work of the local authority staff who have been involved in implementing these changes. The effectiveness of any new system ultimately depends on the work carried out on the ground, and the move to Voter.ie will provide a stronger foundation for electoral registration in Kilkenny into the future,” he concluded.
