Serial offender caught with €10 worth of drugs in Limerick city centre

A MAN with over 100 previous convictions appeared before Limerick District Court.

Brendan Cahill, 38, with a home address at Templegreen, Newcastle West, was brought before the court for a single charge of drug possession.

Gardaí on patrol searched Mr Cahill on Catherine Street, Limerick city on June 4, 2024.

Mr Cahill was found to be in possession of drugs with a street value of €10.

The man made admissions to gardaí, telling them the drugs were for his own personal use.

Prosecuting Sergeant Denis Waters outlined that Mr Cahill has 119 previous convictions.

These are accounted for by a section 15 possession of unlawful drugs for sale or supply conviction, five section three drug possession charges, 24 section four thefts, 18 counts of burglary, eight convictions for failing to appear in court, two public order offences, and one careless driving offence.

The man’s road traffic offence convictions include seven counts of driving without a license, eight counts of driving without insurance, and six counts of driving without an NCT.

Sergeant Waters detailed that some of Mr Cahill’s 119 convictions were due to a failure to produce documents, as required under the Road Traffic Act..

The sergeant told the court the last time Mr Cahill received a conviction was in March, 2025 for a theft offence.

Solicitor Tom Kiely, representing the man, said that Mr Cahill is serving a lengthy sentence.

In mitigation, Mr Kiely said the man made admissions to gardaí at the scene, and has pleaded guilty.

Judge Patrcia Harney convicted and sentenced Mr Cahill to two weeks’ imprisonment.

The judge assigned Mr Kiely legal aid for representing Mr Cahill.
