Kildare County Council (KCC) has revealed that it has no plans to install outdoor exercise equipment in one County Kildare region.

The information comes despite calls from one local representative at the latest Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, July 17 last.

At around the halfway point of the meeting, Fine Gael Cllr Paul Brooks motioned for KCC to ‘consider the introduction of ‘open space infrastructure, such as outdoor exercise equipment’ and for KCC to also ‘commit to providing bench seating along the main avenue in Riverforest Estate, Leixlip’.

His motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Bernard Caldwell.

Cllr Brooks’ motion echoes a similar motion which was heard earlier this month at the latest Naas MD, when Independent Ireland Cllr Ger Dunne has asked KCC to install outdoor athletic sports equipment in Monread Park.

In response to Cllr Brooks’ motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “There are no resources available to carry out any works in Riverforest at present.

KCC added: “Any proposed works could be considered for next year’s works programme, but would have to be considered in the context of existing commitments to deliver projects, staff and financial resources to deliver them.”

Speaking further on the matter, Cllr Brooks insisted that there were ‘lots of green spaces’ in the area which KCC could consider as potential sites to install outdoor exercise equipment on.

“They would be fantastic additional resources to have,” Cllr Brooks asserted.

He also asked KCC if the idea could be considered for placement on its 2027 Capital Works Programme.

A separate councillor at the meeting, Social Democrats Cllr Nuala Killeen, expressed support for Cllr Brooks’ motion, and claimed that the matter has previously been in KCC’s Capital Works Programme for years now.

However, one KCC official who was also in attendance at the meeting, Acting Senior Parks and Landscaping Officer, Simon Wallace, refuted this claim.

Mr Wallace also said that KCC ‘sent out the Works Programme earlier this year’ and added that KCC has ‘to commit to [the projects in] them [first]’.

Moreover, he told Cllr Killeen that there was currently a lack of workers available in his Department.

Despite these points, Mr Wallace also said that he would be open to gathering feedback from the councillors relating to suggestions for sites in the region that may be suitable for outdoor exercise equipment.
