Tensions rise over graffiti debate between Glenties councillors - Donegal News

THE topic of graffiti on road signs caused division between councillors at a meeting of Glenties Municipal District (MD) today.

A discussion on the subject led to a heated exchange between Cllr Michael McClafferty and Cllr Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig in Dungloe Public Services Centre.

Independent Cllr McClafferty condemned what he called “signage getting defaced” by graffiti across the Municipal District.

He highlighted the costs of repairing signs that have been spraypainted and called for unity on the issue among his fellow councillors.

This was seconded by 100% Redress Cllr Denis McGee with Sinn Féin Cllr Brian Carr also expressing his support.

However, Independent Cllr Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig pointed out that graffiti can be used as a means of political expression.

Speaking as Gaeilge, he said: “Graffiti is a legitimate act of protest”.

Cllr Mac Ghiolla Easbuig questioned whether the ‘Free Derry Wall’ or works by graffiti artist and political activist Banksy would be criticised in the same way.

Cllr McClaffery responded that he was not referring to political expression and that he was addressing the costs of repairing “criminal damage” caused by graffiti.

Disagreements between the two councillors escalated until the Cathaoirleach, Fianna Fáil Cllr Anthony Molloy, stepped in and asked for the meeting to move to the next item on the agenda.
