A swim shelter is back in place at Portnablagh following last month’s heavy rain, but its long-term location is under review.

Heavy rain on Sunday, 30th August sent water flowing towards the pier, shifting the sand beneath the conrete shelter and causing it to fall from its original position .

Donegal County Council has now confirmed that the facility has been put back close to where it had been sited, with "measures taken to prevent a repeat of the incident".

The Council said the location will be reviewed over the coming weeks to determine whether a more suitable long-term site can be found.

The shelter, known locally as the Dippers Den, was opened by Dunfanaghy Dippers in July 2025. It was one of four low-maintenance swim shelters provided by Donegal Sports Partnership, with Council support.

"They are a relatively low-cost recreational amenity for local communities and are particularly valued at locations where open water swimming is popular and designed to be low maintenance facility," said a council spokesperson.

Independent Cllr Michael McClafferty, who visited the site this week, said: “I want to thank the Donegal County Council workers and contractor for their prompt response to place it again for the swimming team.”
