A Ballybofey man charged with two counts of seriously assaulting a woman has been remanded in custody.

Darragh Darby has been charged in connection with two alleged incidents earlier this week.

Darby was initially brought before a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Monday evening when he was remanded in custody.

The 26-year-old, of Cois na Finne, Glenfin Road, Ballybofey, subsequently appeared via video link before Judge Emile Daly at Falcarragh District Court, where he was further remanded in custody.

Garda Philip Carroll charged Darby with assaulting a woman and causing her harm on both October 18 and October 19.

The charges are contrary to section 3 (1) and 3(2) of the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act 1997 (as amended by section 20 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023).

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that directions form the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) should be available in early November.

Darby's legal representative asked that the State “put pressure on that given that he is in custody”.

Sergeant Doyle said the case could be adjourned to a date in November to link with other matters and a solicitor for the accused said that this matter should be a "priority", adding that he hoped to have directions for the next date in order to advise his client.
