A local councillor has claimed he and his colleagues are being ‘kept in the dark’ over the ongoing closure of a busy footbridge in east Donegal.

Cllr Patrick McGowan raised the issue of Dromore Footbridge at today’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District.

The structure, which spans the River Finn between Killygordon and Crossroads villages, was closed with immediate effect on January 23 due to safety concerns.

Since the footbridge was shut, temporary traffic lights are in place and vehicular traffic has been reduced to one lane in order to facilitate pedestrians.

Back in May, councillors were informed any potential repair works will not be carried out until June next year, subject to funding.

However, Cllr McGowan believes Donegal County Council has questions to answer over the debacle.

“We are being kept in the dark over Dromore Bridge,” he claimed.

“Questions must be asked about how a bridge designed and built in 2006 had to be closed for safety reasons just 20 years later.”

Councillors are due to get an update on the issue over the coming months.
