Two new Mayors set to be elected in Donegal - Donegal News

TWO new Cathaoirligh, or mayors, are set to be formally named in Donegal today.

It is understood that Independent Cllr Pauric McGarvey will be elected to the role in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District later.

The Rathmullan-based councillor was first co-opted onto Donegal County Council in 2023.

He replaced his uncle, Cllr Ian McGarvey, who was once Ireland’s oldest elected representative and retired from local politics at the age of 92.

Cllr Pauric McGarvey takes over from outgoing Cathaoirleach, Fianna Fáil Cllr Ciaran Brogan.

A new Cathaoirleach will also be elected at the AGM of the Donegal Municipal District, also today.

The role has been held for the past year by Fianna Fáil Cllr Micheal Naughton.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Patrick McGowan was recently appointed the Cathaoirleach of Lifford-Stranorlar MD, with Sinn Féin Cllr Dakota Nic Mheanman becoming Leas-Cathaoirleach.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Cllr Anthony Molloy was elected Cathaoirleach of Glenties MD last month.

Sinn Féin Cllr Brian Carr was chosen as the Leas Cathaoirleach for Glenties MD.
