As children, one of the very first rules we are taught is to fasten our seatbelt before a journey. Despite this, it's one of the most ignored rules and remains an issue on Irish roads.
Gardaí caught and fined 5,848 drivers in Ireland for not wearing a seatbelt during 2024. Meanwhile, 194 people died while not wearing a seatbelt between 2016 and 2025, according to the Road Safety Authority. David Martin from the RSA explains the penalties for those who fail to wear a seatbelt.
This road safety programme is made with the support of the IBI and the Sound and Vision scheme, a Coimisiún na Meán initiative funded by the television licence fee.
