Swimmers have been given the all-clear to dip at six Donegal beaches, but a “do not swim” warning remains in place at Lady’s Bay in Buncrana due to possible elevated levels of E.coli.

Swimming restrictions were issued on Monday for Bundoran, Fintra, Downings, Lisfannon, Lady's Bay, Rathmullan and Portsalon due to a bacteria risk in the water of the popular bathing spots.

As of the Friday evening, Lady’s Bay is now the only one of the seven beaches still affected.

Donegal County Council’s notice on the EPA Beaches.ie site warns that swimming in the water may cause illness and states that bathing is prohibited.

The council identified an influx of storm water following localised heavy rainfall as the likely cause of the possible increase in E.coli levels.

The temporary notice for Lady's Bay (Buncrana shorefront) is dated Wednesday, 19th August 20266.

However, the council said the prohibition would continue until bacterial test results are confirmed and the HSE has been contacted.
