Road safety concerns raised over 'serious issue' blinding Leitrim drivers

Cllr Justin Warnock (FF) brought forward a motion calling for measures to be implemented, in the interests of road safety.

“I will ask for the support of the elected members of this MD to call on the Minister For Transport Darragh O'Brien and the Road Safety Authority to ban the LED automatic high beam dipping mechanisms as they are a danger to motorists on the roads of rural Ireland, also the use of LED light bulbs in headlamps of vehicles not manufactured for these types of light bulbs vehicles," his motion stated.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, Cllr Warnock said that his motion received strong support at the meeting.

“A lot of councillors agreed with the motion. This is a serious issue. The LED lighting is blinding for motorists,” he stated.

“In addition, a lot of cars have lights installed in head lamps that are not suitable for the head lamps,” Cllr Warnock added.

The meeting decided that a letter will issue to both the Minister for Transport and the Road Safety Authority on the matter.
