Bus drivers 'are the worst culprits' for reckless driving on one County Kildare road.

The claim was made by Fianna Fáil Cllr Donna Phelan at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Friday, June 5 last.

During the early stages of the meeting, a motion submitted by Cllr Phelan was taken alongside a similar motion of hers, which related to the Moyglare Road region of Maynooth, and another similar, separate motion from Social Democrats Cllr Peter Melrose.

As part of her first motion, she requested Kildare County Council (KCC) to carry ‘out urgent maintenance and safety upgrades to the two pedestrian crossings serving the Maynooth Education Campus on the Moyglare Road, Maynooth’.

According to Cllr Phelan, this should include ‘the repainting of the zebra crossings and the activation and repair of the flashing beacon lights at both crossings, in the interest of pedestrian and student safety’.

As for her second motion, Cllr Phelan requested KCC to similarly undertake an ‘urgent traffic and road safety review of the Moyglare Road Corridor, Maynooth, particularly at peak school and university times, in light of the increasing traffic congestion and safety concerns arising from the three schools campus, Maynooth University and surrounding residential developments’.

She added that she also wanted KCC to examine and bring forward ‘immediate and long-term measures’ in order to improve road safety, traffic flow and active travel infrastructure along this route.

This motion was seconded by Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney.

Lastly, as part of his motion, Cllr Melrose’s requested KCC to review the junction of Moyglare Hall / Moyglare Road, Maynooth and to ‘consider appropriate traffic measures in the interest of pedestrian and cyclist safety’.

Speaking further on her motions, Cllr Phelan told KCC: “It’s all down to driver behaviour.”

Cllr Phelan added that bus drivers ‘are the worst culprits’ for reckless driving in the region.

She also told KCC: “There are too many people trying to cross that road, and too little safety measures there.

Cllr Phelan concluded by urging KCC to implement temporary safety measures in the area.

Once she concluded her statement, Cllr Melrose spoke and expressed his view that the cycle lane on the Moyglare Road is ‘unusable’.

He also expressed concerns over the shared space on the road.

Moreover, Cllr Melrose pointed out that a serious road traffic incident recently occurred on Moyglare Road.

Following their comments, a senior engineer with KCC who was also present at the meeting told those in attendance, added that KCC ‘is looking into the lighting the region’, and asserted that KCC ‘will get this [project] moving’.

Turning to speak directly to Cllr Melrose, the engineer told the local representative that while space is limited in the shared space, they maintained that it was ‘a dramatic improvement’ compared to what was there.

Cllr Phelan then re-entered the conversation and asked: “Could KCC implement colour-coding on the road, like what is present on the Straffan Road?”

She also noted to KCC: “There are around 2,500 students up there.”

KCC issued the following response to Cllr Phelan’s first motion: “The Zebra Crossings referred to were conditioned to be installed as part of the Department of Education's development works at the Maynooth Educational Campus.

“The developer did not fully commission the signals and KCC has not yet taken the infrastructure in charge.”

KCC added that its Traffic Management Section staff ‘will engage with the Developer with a view to resolving any outstanding issues and getting the Zebra Crossings commissioned’.

Regarding her second motion, KCC replied that it will review the active travel infrastructure and facilities along this route, and also assured Cllr Phelan that it will ‘also engage with the schools from an education perspective through the Road Safety Officer’.

Lastly, in response to Cllr Melrose’s motion, KCC said that it would review the junction of Moyglare Hall and Moyglare Road ‘with respect to active travel infrastructure and facilities’.
