Galway army recruit's massive 'error of judgment'

A 20-year-old army recruit made a ‘catastrophic error of judgment’ when he agreed to store €40,000 worth of drugs at his home, a Galway court has heard this week.

Sean Meier, with an address at 135 Costa Na Mara, Oranmore , Galway , entered a signed guilty plea to an offence contrary to Section 15 (A) of the Misuse of Drugs Act arising from the possession of cocaine and ketamine for the purposes of sale or supply at a time when the aggregate market values of drugs amounted to €13,000 or more.

The offence was committed 135 Costa Na Mara, Oranmore on February 26, 2025.

Meier confirmed his guilty plea at Galway Circuit Criminal Court where Garda Colm Hand outlined the facts of the case in evidence.

The court heard that Garda Hand, accompanied by members of the Galway Divisional Drugs Unit, executed a search warrant at the accused's home on the date in question.

Garda Hand said that the accused and his parents met Gardaí at the door and Meier told them he had drugs in his bedroom and was storing them on behalf of someone else.

The court was told Gardaí found cocaine valued at €38,605 and a quantity of ketamine valued at €2,151.

Garda Hand said that throughout the process, the accused cooperated, expressed remorse and had not come to garda notice prior to since this incident.

The Garda agreed with defence barrister for Sean Meier, Conall MacCarthy SC – instructed by solicitor, Sean Acton – that the defendant has completed a training programme with the Swiss Army and voluntarily retuned to Ireland to meet the case.

Garda Hand also agreed it is reasonable to say this offence was out of character for Meier and the prospect of him coming back before the court is ‘quite limited’.

Conal MacCarthy SC asked that the case be adjourned to allow time for the preparation of a report from the Probation Service.

Meier’s counsel said that in sentencing, the court will also have to have regard to the presumptive minimum ten-year sentence that applies in Section 15 (A) drugs cases.

Mr MacCarthy told the court that he will be submitting that the circumstances of the case are such that there are grounds for the court to depart from the presumptive minimum sentence.

And he asked that the court would remand his client on bail pending the conclusion of the case.

"This is a young man on the threshold of his life and definitely made a catastrophic error of judgment," he told the Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Eoin Garavan granted Mr MacCarthy’s applications and remanded the accused on continuing bail, instructing that he appear again before the court at its sitting on November 10.
