Tractors and agricultural vehicles are a common sight on roads in rural Ireland. However, many drivers fail to ensure their tractors are road safe.
According to the Road Safety Authority, 49 out of the 69 tractors inspected at roadside were found to have major or dangerous defects, between January and October of 2025. Among the top defects typically identified are failure to have functioning 'stop lamps' and faulty tyres. David Martin from the RSA explains the legal requirements tractor drivers must abide by.
This road safety programme is made with the support of the IBI and the Sound and Vision scheme, a Coimisiún na Meán initiative funded by the television licence fee.
