There was one fine for dog fouling issued in Co Monaghan in the past three years.

That fine was issued in 2024, while no fines were issued in 2023 and 2025 for the offence.

Monaghan County Council say they take dog fouling offences seriously and continues to implement a range of measures aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and public awareness across the county.

These measures include enforcement of legislation, regular monitoring and patrols, public awareness campaigns, community engagement initiatives along with investigations of complaints and reports.

In addition, the Council recently adopted the Monaghan Litter Management Plan 2026-2029, which sets out a strategic framework for tackling litter pollution across the county over the next four years.

Bernie McMahon, the acting enviromental awareness officer with Monaghan County Council says it can be very difficult to impose a fine on a dog owner for the offence.

She says the local authority would rather that dog owners take responsiblity for their animals in relation to dog fouling incidents.
