Waterford Trade Unions Echo Calls To Reopen Waterford To Rosslare Railway

The Waterford Council of Trade Unions is calling for the Waterford-Rosslare-Limerick train route to be re-established.

It’s demanding Government TDs in the South East clarify the Government’s stance over South East railways, which it describes as ’incompatible’ with transport policy.

It says the Government says it wants to enhance regional connectivity but the continued closure of the Waterford to Rosslare line contradicts these intentions.

The council says the transport hub which is set to open shortly on the North Quays in Waterford City "has all the required infrastructure for the reopening but in the latest report concerning rail development, this route is glaringly omitted."

Reopening the route would also allow Wexford passengers to make their way to Limerick but at the minute, there’s just one daily service from Waterford to Limerick Junction, with a later connection to Limerick City.

It comes as almost 550 people have signed a petition by former Mayor of Wexford Joe Ryan calling for the recommendations from the All Island Strategic Rail Review to be implemented.

A meeting organised by South East on Track will take place this Thursday September 3rd at 7.30pm in Kinfolk, Eclectic Avenue, Wexford Town to discuss ’how to improve the South East’s rail provision.’
