‘The speeding issue in Lettermacaward has become a bigger problem’

Proactive students at Scoil Bhride in Lettermacaward created a display to remind motorists to slow down.

Pupils, parents and teachers took to standing outside to highlight the 60 km/h speed limit in the area. This follows a recent meeting held with community groups, schools and businesses to discuss the speed issue in the village.

A survey conducted by Transport Infrastructure Ireland in 2024 recorded top speeds of 125km/h and 132km/h between December 8 and December 18, with an average speed of 80 km/h.

“Everyone at the meeting was shocked at these speeds,” Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Carr said. “The speeding issue in Lettermacaward has become a bigger problem since the new realigned N56.

“The 60km zone through the village stretches for 2.1 km, and the Lettermacaward development group and I have been campaigning for a while for stronger traffic-calming measures and better gateway signage. One of the actions agreed at the meeting was to try to create awareness, and what better way to start than the children of Scoil Bhride leading the message.

A series of consultations are taking place across Donegal on the Road Traffic By-Laws 2026. Donegal County Council has undertaken a speed limit review of all public roads in towns, villages and settlements with an existing speed limit of 60km/h or lower. These speed limits have been assessed in accordance with the Department of Transport guidelines, and the proposed changes have been recommended.

The Glenties Municipal District Consultation will take place on Tuesday, June 30 from 3pm to 6pm in the Public Services Centre, Dungloe.
