Up to 300 local young people have got behind the wheel of a tractor as part of a department-funded tractor driving and safety training initiative.

Students aged 14 and over are getting behind the wheel as part of a series of tractor driving and safety courses being delivered across Cavan and Leitrim.

Templeport man Kieran McGovern of KMG Safety Training secured funding under the Department of Agriculture's proposals for Farm Safety, Health and Wellbeing Projects 2026.

The Department is covering 100% of the cost of the programme.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Kieran says the benefits for these young people are huge and it also creates a conversation surrounding farm safety.

The aim of the project is to provide safer tractor driving and safety awareness training. Students gain hands-on practical experience and learn how to safely use what can be one of the most dangerous vehicles on our roads and farms.

By developing good safety habits and awareness, teenagers can help prevent serious accidents and ensure that farms, roads, and workplaces remain safe for everyone to use.

Ronan Gargan sent us this report from St Mogue’s College in Bawnboy.
