Expansion plan for hotel in Mayo town is welcomed - news - Western People

Joan Geraghty The granting of planning permission for an extension to the Wyatt Hotel in Westport has been welcomed by local councillors.

The matter was raised by the newly-elected Cathaoirleach Cllr Brendan Mulroy told last week's meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that he wished to extend congratulations to the Kavanagh Group following the announcement by An Coimisiún Pleanála that the development could go ahead.

“This is a great day for Westport and the district as it shows great faith that the Kavanagh Group would invest this money that will see the addition of 72 bedrooms and 108 parking spaces in the town centre.”

Cllr Peter Flynn said it was really welcome news following on from the official opening of the Grace Hotel, all of which were a real vote of confidence in Mayo.

“We have been very critical of An Coimisiún Pleanála but it has to be welcomed that they turned this decision around very quickly and these parking spaces are needed so much in the town. Hopefully this will now allow us to expand the playground as planned also.”

Cllr John O’Malley expressed congratulations to the Kavanagh Group on getting planning permission, saying it was very positive news, and that “the additional parking is very important, it will be very welcome and this will create new jobs for the area". He said the plans for the development "looked great".

Erris-based Cllr Gerry Coyle also congratulated the Wyatt Hotel operators, saying that the whole municipal district could benefit from any tourists who came to Westport town.
