A new report shows a rapid decline in the number of pubs in Ireland, with 2,205 premises closing their doors since 2005.

The numbers closing their doors for the last time highlights that 1 in 4 pubs across the country have closed their doors over the past 21 years.

The report, compiled on behalf of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland shows an average of 110 pubs stopped trading every year over the last two decades.

All 26 southern counties experienced a decline in pub numbers between 2005 and 2025.

Locally 47 pubs in Cavan have closed since 2005 with 41 in Monaghan over the same period.

Ronan Gargan spoke to a number of publicans from the region live from Clones to discuss the demise of rural pubs across the region.
