A man found in possession of a taser and who is alleged to have threatened to cut a woman’s head off has been remanded in custody.

The man, who is in his 50s and cannot be named for legal reasons in order to protect the alleged victim in the case, appeared before Donegal District Court, sitting at Ballyshannon courthouse.

He has been charged in connection to alleged offences relating to a date in April of this year.

He is charged with making a threat to kill a woman. The charge is contrary to section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

The accused is also charged that he had in his possession a Kelon K95 taser, disguised as a mobile phone. The charge is contrary to section 2 of the Firearms Act 1925, as amended by section 15 of the Firearms Act 1964 and section 3 of the Firearms Act 1971.

When charged, the man told gardai that he understood, the court heard.

His solicitor, Mr Mark Mullaney, was present in court and the man was aided by an interpreter.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the matter can be dealt with at District Court level. Judge Ciaran Liddy accepted jurisdiction after hearing an outline of the matter.

The court heard that Gardai responded to a report of an incident and upon arrival at the scene the woman told officers that the man had threatened to cut her head off. The woman was described as being “very distressed”.

The assistance of the armed support unit was required and the man was taken into custody.

The woman also informed Gardai that the man was in possession of a taser and handcuffs. The taser was sent for assessment and was deemed to be a firearm.
