'They need help' - New initiative to tackle antisocial behaviour in Louth launched

Residents in housing estates in Dundalk and Drogheda are being "plagued" by antisocial behaviour and are in need of help according to Labour councillor Pio Smith.

The comments came after councillors were told about Louth County Council's new tenant engagement strategy aimed at tackling antisocial behaviour.

Cllr Smith told the March meeting of the Drogheda Borough District that tenants are plagued by a small number of people on a regular basis.

He praised the new tenant engagement scheme and said will "alleviate stress" for residents in these estates, but acknowledged in stopping those engaging in antisocial behaviour.

"It is definitely a problem, the antisocial behaviour and tenant engagement strategy will be something that will alleviate stress, because it's unfair the majority of residents in some of these estates.

"It's very hard to pin down enough evidence to nail somebody...they need help," he said.

A spokesperson for Louth County Council told the meeting that it hopes to have the new initiative in place by October of this year.

The new initiative is aimed at those who are in any sort of tenancy agreement with the local authority, such as council properties, Part V acquisitions and long term leases.

The council said the new strategy will give tenants "an opportunity to have a voice"

The new strategy hopes to implement "preventative" measures to curb antisocial behaviour, improve tenant engagement and strengthen data protection.

Louth County Council confirmed it received 15 cases of anti social behaviour since mid-December of 2025, with the majority coming in Drogheda (9).
