Miss this deadline and you could be struck off council's housing list

Applicants on the Dublin City Council housing waiting list must complete a needs assessment by September 2 to avoid being removed from the list.

DCC are currently carrying out their Social Housing Needs Assessment for 2026, and councillors are warning applicants they risk losing their place on the list if they don’t pay attention to what comes through their letter box. Previous assessments have seen thousands of applicants struck from the list as they failed to heed the council’s multiple reminders.

Sinn Féin Councillor Janice Boylan spoke directly to her constituents in a social media video where she wanted them “it is very, very important that you deal with this”. She explained that a letter will be sent to applicants giving them all the information they need to fill out the needs assessment.

“You will get an initial letter. You’ll get a second letter if you don’t answer the initial letter and then if you don’t answer the second letter you’ll get a cancellation letter to say you are taken off the list,” she said.

Applicants can submit their assessments through the Citizen Hub Portal on the Dublin City Council website. The council strongly encouraged applicants to use the portal, although they did confirm that a postal return is still possible.

Social Democrats Cllr Jesslyn Henry also stressed the importance of all those who receive a letter responding before the September 2 deadline, stating “do not delay in filling it out”. She confirmed that those awaiting transfers, including HAP and RAS tenants are not required to complete the assessment.

Those filling out the assessment will need to provide their date of birth along with their housing reference number. This number will be included in the letter sent out.
