A ten-year archaeological project in County Roscommon has been hailed a 'major success'.

The 'Castles in Communities' project was based at the early 14th-century Ballintuber Castle since 2015.

It saw students from universities in the United States visit the west Roscommon village each summer.

The main focus of the dig was outside the castle walls and included the discovery of deserted medieval settlement.
