Laois defendant was in Spain, but court told

A SOLICITOR told Judge Susan Fay that while his client was not present in court, he was entering a guilty plea on his behalf to three charges when the case came before last week’s sitting of the Portlaoise District Court.

Solicitor Brian Duffy said that his client, Kane McGann, Kilmalogue, Portarlington was pleading guilty to being intoxicated in a public place, engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at Foxcroft Street, Portarlington and to criminally damaging a car on Main Street, Portarlington on 4 April.

Mr Duffy said that Mr McGann was unable to attend court because “he’s doing seasonal work in Spain and gives an assurance he will be back” to attend court.

Judge Fay replied: “I hope he will have the money (to pay for the damage done to the car) with him.” “He will,” said Mr Duffy.

Mr McGann was remanded on continuing bail to the 8 September sitting of Portlaoise District Court for the finalisation of the case.
