CONCERNS have been raised about the future of the lawn bowling green at Bernard McGlinchey Town Park in Letterkenny.

CONCERNS have been raised about the future of the lawn bowling green at Bernard McGlinchey Town Park in Letterkenny.

The lawn, home to the Letterkenny Lawn Bowling Club, is owned by the HSE and leased by Donegal County Council.

However, the lease is due for renewal and concerns were raised by councillors Jimmy Kavanagh and Declan Meehan at the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting yesterday.

Fine Gael Cllr Kavanagh said that the green was founded in 2004 and is an “excellent” facility.

He praised the bowling club’s success at national and international competitions.

However, he added that they are “hampered by not having changing facilities” and urged the council to negotiate a new lease, which would also help the club with maintenance of the green.

Independent Cllr Meehan also urged the council to facilitate the lease so the club can apply for capital funding for development.

He highlighted how the club has gone from “strength to strength” and includes members from all over Donegal.

Cllr Meehan added that he has met with club members, who he said are currently “left in limbo” with the situation.

“We need to keep sitting around the table on this,” he said.

In response, council officials confirmed that staff are available to review and discuss the issue.

They said: “The Property referred to in the motion is under the ownership of the HSE and leased by Donegal County Council therefore any lease discussions will require discussions with the HSE.

“Donegal County Council staff are available to discuss any future plans with the bowling club. Any consideration of developments around the bowling green will have to take into account the impact that it would have on the Bernard McGlinchey Town Park and how the area would be maintained.”
