The case came before Ballaghaderreen District Court

A 26-year-old bricklayer was fined a total of €700 and disqualified from driving by Judge James Faughnan at Ballaghaderreen District Court.

Niall James McNicholas, Bushfield, Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, was stopped by Sergeant Shane Kelliher on May 4, 2025, at Aghadrestan, Co Roscommon.

The court heard he had no insurance, NCT or tax on the vehicle. The car had been off the road for six months and he had missed direct payments to the insurance company.

Judge Faughnan said: “They put the disc on the windscreen and hope for the best.”

Solicitor Kenneth McDonnell said his client had been going to visit his child on the day. The judge disqualified Mr McNicholas from driving for two years for having no insurance and fined him €500.

He also imposed a €100 fine for failing to have an NCT and a further €100 fine for failing to have tax.
