Longford set for splash of colour following open call for mural artists

Longford Town could soon become a colourful open-air art gallery thanks to the ambitions of the Longford Arts Office and Longford Tidy Towns for a major mural programme that will transform public spaces across over a period of five years.

The newly launched Longford Mural Project will see a series of original artworks created at locations throughout the town centre and along key routes, with organisers hoping to establish a self-guided mural trail for residents and visitors alike.

The call is open to artists with experience in large-scale public work who wish to create murals based on themes such as local heritage, biodiversity and community wellbeing. Artists will also be encouraged to engage with the public through workshops and events linked to the artwork.

Themes for the artworks will include Longford's rich heritage, biodiversity, waterways, peatlands and community wellbeing, with organisers hoping the murals will create lasting visual landmarks throughout the town. According to the council, “Longford’s waterways, peatlands and historic streets will provide inspiration for new work that reflects both the town’s past and its future.”

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council , Garry Murtagh said the exciting new initiative would bring new life to public spaces while championing local pride.

“Public art has the power to transform everyday spaces, spark conversation and strengthen a sense of belonging. This programme will showcase the creativity of artists while celebrating the character, history and aspirations of Longford. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when communities, artists and local organisations work together with a shared vision for their town."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon, spoke of the local authority’s commitment to supporting creativity across the county.

“Longford County Council is committed to supporting creativity, placemaking and cultural development across our county. This mural programme represents an exciting opportunity to invest in public spaces, support professional artists, and create lasting visual landmarks that will enhance the experience of living or visiting Longford Town. We are proud to support this partnership between Longford Arts Office and Longford Tidy Towns and look forward to seeing these projects come to life."

Artists selected for the panel may be considered for commissions from 2026 with budgets expected to range from €5,000 to €15,000, depending on scale.
