Basic lack of road makings reflects larger issues says D’Arcy General Stories The Munster Express

In what started as routine comments from Councillor Jim D’Arcy at the June meeting of the Waterford Metropolitan District Council regarding road markings ended with a note of frustration, as Cllr D’Arcy questioned the Council’s inability to do ‘the basics right’

“We seem to be getting on with a lot of stuff here in the City,” said Cllr D’Arcy. “But we can’t seem to get the basics right. It is a very, very basic thing to get our road markings correct, to get our signage clean.

“We are letting ourselves down as a city with the road markings, especially in the upper grange area, you just can’t see the lines on the road,” he said.

“This is what we are here for,” he continued. “It’s nice to be involved with economic development, and involved in the nicer stuff, and the tourism side of things, but we are not getting the basics right. And there’s no excuse for it.

“Road markings are not that expensive. Some of the stuff, like us badly needing a multi-story carpark, you are talking about big money there, but this is basic stuff.”

Cllr Seamus Ryan followed these comments by asking that the stone at the entrance to Ursuline Court be cleaned.

Senior Engineer Paul Johston pushed back slightly saying the expenditure of road markings has increase significantly in recent years.

“I do take the point that there are more road markings to do done,” he said. “But we’ve probably spent more in the last two years on road markings than we have in the past 10 years.

“I know there is quite a lot to be done and sign cleaning, as you mention, but I would point out, in fairness to the teams on the ground, they have been awarded Ireland’s cleanest city and cleanest urban centre in the country,” Mr. Johston added.
