Jake’s Law isn’t going to make any difference said a local rep

Caoimhin Treacy Local authorities will carry out an assessment to determine whether traffic calming measures are needed in a Newbridge housing estate.

The issue arose when cllr Peggy O’Dwyer brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD), proposing that Kildare County Council considers the installation of traffic calming measures in College Farm, Newbridge. Cllr O’Dwyer suggested chicanes or speed ramps as possible measures.

An executive engineer for the MD issued the council’s response, which stated that the district office will carry out 'a technical assessment in College Farm with respect to traffic calming measures'. The report added that any works would be subject to the availability of staff and funding.

Cllr O’Dwyer pushed for the measures, saying that “Jake’s Law isn’t going to make any difference” when it comes to improving safety on the estate’s roads.

Jake’s Law refers to the introduction of 30km/h speed limits in residential housing estates, named after six-year-old Jake Brennan, who was killed outside his home in Kilkenny in 2014.

It was also agreed at the meeting that the council will write to the National transport Authority (NTA) requesting a new bus stop at Curragh Farm.
