A man charged with the murder of his father in West Waterford has had his case sent forward for trial.

John Cashman Jr (45) with an address at Rockfield, Cappagh, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, appeared before Judge John O’Leary at Dungarvan District Court on Monday 27 July. He is charged with the murder of his father, John Cashman Sr, outside their Cappagh home on 13 April 2026.

The accused is currently in custody in Cork Prison and was produced in court for a book of evidence to be served.

He had initially been charged with assault causing harm, but this was struck out and upgraded to a murder charge on Monday 22 June.

Sergeant Alan Hayes said that the DPP consented in June this year for the accused to be sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court on the sole count of murder.

Judge O’Leary issued the accused with an alibi warning, explaining that the accused has 14 days to furnish the DPP with details of any alibi he may call to give evidence at the trial.

Sgt Hayes told the court that he explained the matter of a Section 56 disclosure order to the accused, as he was appearing in court without legal representation.

The accused asked for disclosure, which it is understood includes video interviews, to be sent directly to him, until his solicitor Frank Buttimer officially “comes on record” as he is currently taking part in industrial action.

Judge O’Leary made an order for disclosure to be granted to both the accused and Mr. Buttimer.

The judge then sent the accused forward for trial to the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
