OVER 70 complaints were made about Limerick-based legal practitioners in 2025, according to the Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA) annual report.

The report shows that the LSRA received 71 complaints during 2025 concerning legal practitioners based in county Limerick.

The LSRA received 1,788 complaints in 2025 which marks an increase of 21% compared to the previous year.

The LSRA’s Annual 2025 report reveals that the organisation has closed more complaints than before and has also increased its enforcement activity.

The report details that the LSRA made 27 applications to the High Court to enforce directions issued following complaints investigations and 101 applications to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Chief Executive Officer of the LSRA, Niamh Muldoon said the figures reflected growing public awareness of the LSRA's role and ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the complaints process.

"The increase in complaints received reflects growing awareness of the LSRA's role as the independent regulator of legal services and the availability of an independent complaints process for consumers.

"At the same time, the record number of complaints closed demonstrates the ongoing work of LSRA staff and members of our regulatory committees to improve processes and deliver timely outcomes,” she stated.

"The work set out in this report demonstrates how our statutory functions work together.

"Complaints handling, research, legal education and public engagement each play an important role underpinning high standards, supporting consumer protection and ensuring confidence in legal services.”

Chairperson of the LSRA, Tom Boland said: "2025 was a year of sustained delivery across the LSRA's core areas of activity.

"The authority continued to oversee a regulatory environment that is growing in scale and complexity while ensuring that its systems and processes remained robust, proportionate and responsive.”

The Legal Services Regulatory Authority is an independent statutory body set up under the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015 with a range of functions.

It is responsible for regulating the provision of legal services by legal practitioners (barristers and solicitors) and ensuring the maintenance and improvement of standards in the provision of legal services.
